Assets

Keep the images your content uses in one library, and share them across projects.

What an asset is

An asset is an image in your library that content blocks can show. Assets keeps them in one place, so a logo or a banner is uploaded once and then picked from the list whenever you build content.

  • One asset can serve several projects. An asset is connected to one or more projects, and every project it is connected to lists it and can use it.
  • The same image is stored once. Uploading a file that is already in the library, byte for byte, does not create a copy. The existing asset is connected to the projects you picked instead, and keeps its name.
  • In use means content shows it. An asset is in use when a content block in the project you are looking at shows it, as an image, a hero image or an image overlay. Content in other projects does not count towards it.

Use Cases

Add images to the library

You can add images in three ways.

  • New asset, or a click on the drop zone, opens your file browser. You can pick several files at once.
  • Drag and drop image files onto the drop zone.
  • Import URL fetches an image from a web address. See The Import from URL dialog.

Choosing files opens Upload assets, with one entry per file. Each file has these settings.

  • Name, which starts as the file name without its extension.
  • Projects, the projects to connect it to. It starts with the project you are working in, and you can add others or pick All projects. Upload stays unavailable while any file has no project.
  • Tags, picked from a fixed list (see Limits and caveats).

With several files, the list on the left switches between them, Add more adds files, and Upload all uploads every one.

Uploads accept PNG, JPG, SVG, GIF and WebP files of up to 10 MB each. A file is not uploaded when an asset with the same name is already in one of its projects; the message that follows names it, and the other files still upload. Rename it and upload it again.

Use an asset in a content block

In the content editor, select an Image block. In its properties, Choose from assets opens a picker with the assets connected to the content block's project. Search by name or tag, or filter by a single tag, then click an image to use it.

The Image block also takes a new image directly: drop a file on it, click it to browse, or paste an image. That image is uploaded to Assets and connected to the content block's project, so it appears in the library afterwards.

Once content shows an asset, the asset's details list that content under Used in. A content block's own details list its images under Uses, and clicking one opens it in Assets.

Share, rename and remove assets

Click an asset to open its details (see The details panel). The details let you do the following.

  • Rename it. Hover over the name and click the pencil, then press Enter to save or Escape to cancel.
  • Change its tags. Click × on a tag to remove it, or Add to pick another.
  • Share it with another project. Add the project under Connected projects. Taking a project out of that list removes the asset from that project straight away, unless content there still shows it. Taking out the last project deletes the asset, after you confirm.
  • Copy URL copies a link to the image, and Download saves the file.

The delete button is on each card when you hover over it, in each row's menu in list view, and at the bottom of the details panel. It always asks first, and shows the image so you can check it is the right one. What it does depends on where the asset is connected:

  • Connected to other projects as well: Remove takes it out of the project you are viewing only, and the dialog says how many projects keep it. Delete from all projects, which shows how many, switches to deleting it everywhere, which you confirm again.
  • Connected to this project only, or you are viewing All projects: Delete (or Delete everywhere, for an asset in several projects) deletes it permanently.

If content in that project still shows the asset, it is not removed and Asset still in use lists that content. Remove anyway removes it even so, and the dialog warns that this breaks the image in that content. Cancel leaves everything as it was. To keep that content working, replace the image in it first.

FAQs

I uploaded an image but no new asset appeared. Why?

The same image was already in the library. Instead of storing a copy, the upload connected the existing asset to the projects you picked, and it kept its original name.

Can I use one image in several projects?

Yes. Add the projects under Connected projects in its details, or pick several projects when you upload it.

How do I find out which content uses an image?

The link badge on its card and the Used in column in list view count that content, and Used in in its details lists it. Both cover the project you are viewing.

What happens to content if I delete an image it uses?

You are warned first, and Asset still in use names the content. Remove anyway goes ahead, and the dialog warns that this breaks the image in that content. Replace the image in the content first to avoid that.

Can I upload an image larger than 10 MB?

No. Compress or resize it first.
