Content Blocks

Build in-app messages, surveys, ratings and push notifications once, then reuse them in journeys and campaigns.

What a content block is

A content block is a message you build once and keep in the library, ready to be shown by a journey or a campaign. Content Blocks lives under Experience, in the Library section of the side menu.

There are four content types.

  • In-app is shown inside your app, as a popup, a carousel or a banner.
  • Survey collects feedback with NPS, satisfaction or your own questions.
  • Rating is a quick star, emoji or thumbs rating.
  • Push is a notification sent to the device.

Each content block belongs to one project, so it can use that project's personalization. When you create one you also pick a device size: small to medium for phones and tablets, or medium to large for laptops and desktops. Push has no device size.

A block can pull in an image from Assets and the colors and fonts of a brand kit from Brand Kits, and the library shows you which ones it uses.

Draft, Ready and In use

Every content block has a status, shown in the list and in the editor.

  • Draft is still being worked on. New content and every copy start here.
  • In review is a draft whose campaign or journey is waiting for approval. It is read-only until the decision.
  • Ready means it is finished and can be picked.
  • In use means it is Ready and a launched campaign or a published journey is showing it.
  • Superseded is a version a newer Ready version replaced.

You mark a draft ready from the Save menu in the editor, or from its row's menu. You do not have to: a campaign or journey goes live only on Ready content, so launching a campaign or activating a journey sets each draft it shows Ready. Before it does, its confirmation lists every draft that will change.

When the campaign or journey needs approval, its drafts go In review instead, and the confirmation says who approves. Approving sets them Ready. Rejecting or deleting the campaign or journey, or taking a campaign back out of approval, puts them back to Draft, unless another campaign or journey waiting for approval still holds them.

In use is not something you choose: a block shows as In use while its latest version is Ready and a launched campaign or a published journey version shows it, and it goes back to Ready when nothing shows it any more. A draft campaign or journey is listed under Used in without making the block In use.

Ready in-app and survey content does not go back to Draft: you change it through a new version, and setting that version Ready supersedes the previous one. A superseded version leaves the list, but every campaign and journey step that points at it keeps showing it. The Versions section of the details panel lists each version and what still shows it.

Use Cases

Create a content block

  1. Open Content Blocks and click New content.
  2. Pick the project the content is for, then the content type. For in-app content, also pick the layout: popup, carousel or banner.
  3. Pick the device size and click Choose template. Push and Rating have no templates, so for them the button reads Continue and opens the editor straight away.
  4. Pick a template and click Use template, or click Start from scratch for an empty canvas.
  5. In the editor, drag blocks from the Blocks panel onto the canvas, then click a block to change it in the side panel.
  6. Give the content a name and click Save. To mark it finished, open the menu next to Save and choose Mark as ready and save.

The new block is now in the library, and you can pick it in a journey or a campaign.

Reuse and copy content

One content block can be used in as many places as you like. Push content changes everywhere at once. In-app and survey content changes through versions, so each journey moves to a new version when you point it there.

  1. Click a row to open its details. Used in lists every campaign and journey using it, and clicking one opens it.
  2. To change it, click Edit. Push content is saved in place, for all of them. Ready in-app and survey content opens a draft version instead: set it ready, then point each journey's step at it in a new version of the journey.
  3. To try a variation without touching what is live, open the row's menu and choose Duplicate. The copy is added as a draft, named after the original with "(copy)" at the end, and it is not used anywhere yet. The name in the notice opens the copy in the editor.
  4. From inside the editor, Save as new in the Save menu keeps your changes as a new content block and leaves the original as it was.

Clean up the library

  1. Use the filters to find what you are looking for: a project, a name, a content type or a status. Draft shows content that was never finished.
  2. Click a row and check Used in before you remove anything.
  3. Open the row's menu and choose Delete, then confirm. Delete removes every version of the content, and content made in the old dashboard is deleted there too. If any version is still used in a journey or campaign, the dialog names them instead, and you remove the content from them, or delete them, first.
  4. The content leaves the list, and a notice gives you a few seconds to click Undo.

FAQs

Why is there no New content button?

It is only shown to members who can create content. Ask an admin for access.

Why can I not choose In use myself?

In use follows what users can see. The status changes to In use when the content is Ready and a launched campaign or a published journey shows it, and back to Ready when nothing shows it. A draft campaign or journey is only listed under Used in.

Why did my draft become Ready?

A campaign or journey goes live only on Ready content. Launching the campaign or activating the journey set the draft Ready, after its confirmation listed it.

Why is my content In review, and why can I not edit it?

A campaign or journey that shows it is waiting for approval. Until the decision it cannot be edited or set ready. Approving sets it Ready, and rejecting puts it back to Draft. The Versions section of its details names what it is waiting for.

Why is my draft missing when I pick existing content?

The Content step of a campaign and the Select content picker in the journey builder offer each message at its Ready version only. Set the draft ready first.

Can I use one content block in several journeys?

Yes. Pick it in as many journeys and campaigns as you like. Every one of them shows under Used in. A change to push content reaches all of them, and a new version of in-app or survey content reaches a journey once its step points at that version.

Why does my copy say "(copy)"?

Duplicate names the new draft after the original with "(copy)" at the end. Rename it in the editor by clicking the name.

I deleted something by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes, for a few seconds. Click Undo in the notice that appears after you delete.

Why do Push and Rating skip the templates?

They have no templates, so the dialog opens the editor straight away.
