License

Where your server stands against its Countly license: status, usage against the tier limit, due date, and which projects and event types the usage comes from.

What the License page shows

Your Countly license sets how much the server may collect, and the License page, under Manage, is where you see how the server measures up against it. It is an administrator's page.

It has two tabs. License is the plan itself: its status, the metric it is billed on, current usage against the tier limit, the due date and fee, usage month by month over the license period, the tiers available, and a history of every activation and renewal. Events (Data Points) is where that usage comes from: events per project over a date range, the projects busiest in the last two hours, and the times of day when events arrive.

The License tab describes the whole server. The Events tab takes a project filter, all projects or one, and the date range beside it.

How usage is counted against your license

A data point is one thing an SDK sent: a session, or an event that is not a session. Total events on the Events tab is those two added together, and that is the figure a data-point license is measured against.

A license is billed on one rule, which the Billing metric card names: monthly data points, total data points across the license period, monthly active profiles, or average monthly active profiles. The tier limit is the card's Up to figure, and Current usage reads how much of it is used in the same basis, Monthly, Total, or Average. An unlimited license has no limit, so Current usage and Billing metric both say Unlimited and the utilization chart draws no limit line.

Status is Active while the license is in its period and a tier is active, Expired once the period has passed, and Inactive otherwise. When the license is expiring, expires today, has expired, or is over its limit, a license banner appears under the top bar, with a View license link on every page but this one, so you do not have to visit this page to find out.

Use Cases

Check how close you are to your limit

You want to know whether this month, or this license period, is going to go over.

  1. Open Manage > License. The Current usage gauge reads used of limit in the metric you are billed on; its ring turns amber past 80 percent and red once you are over the limit.
  2. Read Billing metric beside it for the rule and the tier limit, and Due date for how many days are left.
  3. In License utilization, usage is plotted month by month against a dashed Tier limit line. Where usage rises above the line, the area above it is shaded red. For a data-point license, switch the card between monthly usage and total usage from its title, and the limit line follows the basis your license is billed on.
  4. If the gauge is amber, open the Events tab to see which projects are responsible before you talk to your account manager.

Find which projects drive your usage

Usage is higher than expected, and you need to know which project and which kind of event is behind it.

  1. Open the Events tab, set the date range, and leave the project filter on All projects.
  2. Events per project lists every project sorted by Total events. The All projects row stays pinned at the top whatever you sort by. When consolidated data is present, two more pinned rows split it into direct and consolidated events; hover the info icon beside each to read what it holds.
  3. Click a project's row to expand it. The Event breakdown lists sessions and every event type, Crashes, Views, Custom Events and the rest, largest first.
  4. Read the Change column for how each project moved against the previous period.
  5. Top projects by total events in the last 2h shows the live picture, and the punch card shows which weekdays and hours carry the most events. Both help when a spike is recent.

Renew or upgrade your license

The license is about to expire, or you have outgrown its tier, and you have a new license file from Countly.

  1. The dashboard warns you first. A banner across every page says how many days remain, or that you are over your licensed limit, with a View license link back here.
  2. Get the new license file from your Customer Success Manager or accounts@count.ly. Upgrades, downgrades, and renewals all arrive as a new file.
  3. On the License tab, choose Add license at the top right, drop the file in or browse for it, and confirm. Add license is offered only on a live server, and only to administrators.
  4. Check the KPI strip. Status should read Active with a new activation date, and Due date should show the new period.
  5. License history records the change as a renewal, an upgrade, or a downgrade, with the tier and the period it covers.

FAQs

Why does the utilization chart show no Tier limit line?

The license is unlimited, or the chart is in a basis the limit is not denominated in. An unlimited license has no limit to draw. A data-point license draws the line only in the mode it is billed on, monthly or total, so switch the card title back to that mode.

Why do I not see Add license?

Either the dashboard is not connected to a live Countly server, or you are not an administrator. The button is offered only when both are true.

What does Approximated mean on a row?

The split between sessions and non-session events is unavailable for that period, so those two columns are empty. The Total events figure is still accurate.

What are All projects, direct and All projects, consolidated?

They appear when data consolidation is configured. Direct is the events collected from your projects with the duplicated consolidated data removed; consolidated is the extra events from consolidation, the same data counted again across projects. All projects is the sum of the two.

The banner says my license expires soon. What do I do?

Get the renewed license file from your Customer Success Manager or accounts@count.ly, then choose Add license on the License tab and upload it. Status and Due date update, and the history records the renewal.

A red Payment overdue bar is on every page. What does it mean?

Countly has marked an invoice for this license as overdue. Everyone who signs in sees the bar, and nothing is locked by it. Contact billing opens an email to finance@count.ly. Once the mark is cleared, the bar goes away after the server's next license check.
